Foundation in 1833

St. Patrick's Church - Standing strong since 1833

In 1833, the Parish of Strait-Chedabucto was formally established to serve the growing Catholic community in the Chedabucto Bay region. Irish and Scottish immigrants, seeking new opportunities in the promising lands of Nova Scotia, brought with them a deep Catholic faith that would become the cornerstone of their new community.

These early settlers faced numerous challenges - harsh winters, rugged terrain, and the difficulties of establishing life in a frontier region. Yet their faith remained steadfast, and their determination to build a proper house of worship became a unifying force that bound the scattered communities together.

In that same founding year of 1833, construction began on St. Patrick's Church, which would become the spiritual heart of our parish. Built with the sweat and sacrifice of our founding families, the church stands as a testament to their unwavering commitment to their Catholic faith.

Today, the Parish of Strait-Chedabucto continues the mission begun in 1833. Under the pastoral leadership of Father Gerard MacDonald and with the active participation of our parishioners, we remain a vibrant faith community serving the Chedabucto Bay region.
